Unpacking the Latina Mother’s Day Gift Preference: Electronics Top List as Verizon Launches Promotions for Latin Consumers

40% of Latinas in the US Prefer Technology Over Jewelry on Mother’s Day

A recent study conducted by Morning Consult revealed that a majority of Latina mothers in the US prefer cell phones or smart watches as gifts for Mother’s Day, which is double the preference of the rest of Americans. Electronics, such as phones and smart watches, have become more popular gift choices among Latina mothers than jewelry or clothing. However, flowers still remain the most expected gift for Mother’s Day.

In addition to this study, Verizon also found that three out of every four Latino adults communicate with their maternal figure at least once a week, with more than half of Gen Z Latinos calling their mother figures every day. This report highlights the close relationship between Latin women and their mother figures compared to American women.

Verizon has taken notice of this trend and has launched promotions and offers targeting Latin consumers in the US for Mother’s Day, recognizing the importance of technology in connecting mothers with their loved ones. Many Latina mothers consider their phones important for parenting and staying in touch with family members, using them to take photos, stay connected via social media and video call.

The company has introduced discounts and offers specifically aimed at this demographic, including new smartphone models such as the iPhone 15 or Galaxy S24+. The survey also showed that Latina mothers are more likely to delay purchasing new smartphone models than other groups, making Mother’s Day a prime opportunity for Verizon to promote discounts to this demographic.

It’s worth noting that Hispanics in the US tend to celebrate other maternal figures such as sisters, grandmothers or aunts on Mother’s Day more than Americans do in general. This survey included national samples of Americans, Latinos, American Latina mothers and caregivers.

Verizon’s Vice President of Local and Segment Marketing Robyn Parks emphasized the importance of technology in connecting families with loved ones and highlighted Verizon’s commitment to providing families with the technology and services they need. Overall, these studies suggest an increasing reliance on technology for communication and connection among Latin women in the US.
