National Park Adventures: Tips for Crowd-Free Hiking from Couple Who’s Been There and Back

Tips from Couple on Avoiding Crowds at US National Parks

Matt and Karen Smith, a college sweetheart couple who turned 63 this year, are known for their passion for hiking, wildlife and exploring the outdoors. After raising their three children and becoming empty-nesters in 2010, they embarked on a journey to visit every US national park.

Their adventure took them to some of the most remote locations in the country like American Samoa and north of the Arctic circle. They shared their experiences with their friends Bob and Sue through emails which eventually turned into their first book “Dear Bob and Sue.” Today, the couple continues to share their love for national parks through Instagram and their podcast.

With summer approaching, many Americans are planning to visit a US national park. However, according to Matt and Karen Smith, crowds can be avoided by following these tips:

1. Plan ahead: Research the best time to visit each national park based on weather patterns, peak seasons and visitor numbers. Avoid visiting during peak season when crowds are at their highest.

2. Choose less popular parks: Some national parks are more popular than others due to their unique features or popularity among tourists. Consider visiting lesser-known parks that offer similar experiences without the crowds.

3. Hike early or late: Hiking early in the morning or late in the evening can help you avoid crowds while still enjoying the beauty of nature. Make sure you have enough gear and supplies before heading out on your hike.

4. Use alternative transportation: Instead of driving your own car, consider using alternative transportation options like buses or trains that take you directly into the park without passing through crowded areas.

5. Be respectful of wildlife: Remember that national parks are home to wildlife so it’s important to be aware of your surroundings at all times
