Expanding Health Care Access for Dreamers: A Positive Step Toward Equality for Undocumented Youth

Congressman Cohen praises Biden Administration’s decision to expand health care coverage to DACA recipients

Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-9) applauded the Biden Administration’s decision to publish a final rule that expands health care access for Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) recipients, also known as “Dreamers.” This rule ensures that DACA recipients can now enroll in a Qualified Health Plan through the Affordable Care Act Health Insurance Marketplace or opt for coverage through a Basic Health Program. According to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), this rule could result in up to 100,000 previously uninsured Dreamers gaining health care coverage.

In response to this news, Congressman Cohen emphasized the importance of providing health care access to Dreamers, noting that they are integral members of our communities. He stressed that removing obstacles to health care for Dreamers is a step in the right direction. Congressman Cohen also highlighted the significance of recognizing health care as a fundamental right, rather than a privilege, and emphasized that those who have established lives and careers in the United States deserve equitable access to health care services.
