The AUA employees had hoped for both sides to compromise during negotiations, as the salary offered was not enough to sustain them. The significant disparity in pay between the parent company Lufthansa and Austrian Airlines for the same work led to a high turnover rate among young employees who could not afford to stay in their job long-term.

The demanding nature of the work and low pay made it challenging for some colleagues to afford living expenses. Those who needed a car to commute to work had to rely on their parents or move back in with them. The union Vida’s demands for better income potential, access to meals around the clock, and suitable accommodation near the airport were seen as necessary by employees.

As job requirements evolved, they became more physically demanding, causing stress for employees with families. Access to food options was often limited, leading employees to bring their meals or cook in their rooms. The demand for amenities like a pool and fitness area was essential for employees’ physical fitness, which was crucial for performing their duties effectively.

While some aspects of the demands may have seemed excessive to outsiders, the employees believed they were necessary for their well-being and ability to perform their duties efficiently. Staying rested and well-fed was critical to responding quickly and efficiently to emergencies while minimizing the physical toll of the job, especially on flight attendants’ feet.
