Promising Steps towards Polio Eradication: WHO Health Ministers Gather for Regional Strategies

Health Ministers gather in crucial year to discuss polio eradication efforts – Global Polio Eradication Initiative

During a recent virtual meeting, health ministers from the WHO Eastern Mediterranean Region gathered to discuss regional strategies for combating polio and share updates on outbreak responses and vaccination campaigns. The meeting was the first convened by the new WHO Regional Director for the Eastern Mediterranean, Dr. Hanan Balhky.

Her Excellency Dr. Hanan Al-Kuwari, Minister of Public Health in Qatar and Subcommittee Co-chair, welcomed Dr. Balhky’s determination to end polio during her tenure. Her Excellency Mr. Abdul Rahman Mohammed Al Oweis, Minister of Health and Prevention of the United Arab Emirates, and Subcommittee Co-chair, represented by His Excellency Dr. Hussain Al Rand, also expressed their enthusiasm for Dr. Balhky’s vision and expertise in propelling regional efforts towards eradicating polio.

The Subcommittee aims to strengthen its fight against polio and work towards its eradication under Dr. Balhky’s leadership, which is seen as a promising step towards bringing the world closer to eradicating this debilitating disease.
