Midco Sports Layoffs: Company Shifts Focus to Enhanced Streaming and Partnerships with Universities

Midco Sports shifts focus to streaming, lays off TV personalities – InForum

Recently, Midco Sports, the media entity that broadcasts athletics for the University of North Dakota, South Dakota State and University of South Dakota, announced layoffs affecting several employees. Sources close to the company reveal that popular on-air voices such as Brian Shawn, David Brown, Jody Norstedt and others were informed of the layoffs on Tuesday due to budget cuts.

In response to these changes, Midco Sports is shifting its focus towards enhancing streamed content on Midco Sports Plus and partnering with universities on its linear channels, Midco Sports and Midco Sports Two. This shift has led to a reduction in the number of full-time team members. As a result, high school sports and some original programming will no longer be produced or broadcast on their linear channels.

Although this decision was difficult, it was necessary for the company to continue providing quality coverage of athletic events while also staying within budgetary constraints. Despite the layoffs, Midco Sports remains committed to its partnerships with universities and plans on enhancing its content delivery through streaming services and continued collaboration with schools’ athletic departments.

Notable personalities like Brian Shawn, Jody Norstedt, David Brown among others were affected by the layoffs. Shawn was known for his play-by-play duties for NDSU football before transitioning to UND football and basketball; Norstedt’s focus was high school athletics in North Dakota; Brown was the voice of Augustana hockey – all impacted by recent restructuring. However, some employees like Jay Elsen and Taylor Budge were retained in respective locations to continue their roles.

Midco Sports had previously televised the quarterfinals and semifinals of the Summit League men’s and women’s basketball tournaments. While these recent layoffs have had an impact on the organization, it is clear that Midco Sports remains dedicated to delivering top-quality coverage while staying within budgetary constraints.
